Wanderers Golf Club, Sandton

wanderers golf clubWanderers Golf Course is situated in Illovo Sandton, alongside the famous Wanderers cricket stadium. The scenic 18-hole Wanderers Golf Course is centrally located and plays 6 274 metres long, with a par of 72. The ground has played host to many top events, ample proof of its outstanding condition. Compleat Golfer magazine rated Wanderers' 19th hole, which enjoys a magnificent view of the course, as one of the best in the country.

Course development in the past thirty years, design, layout and grass technology have undergone dramatic change. Prior to 1972 very little money seemed to be spent on course improvement. Here on the Highveld golfers resigned themselves to playing on brown fairways and brittle hard greens. The Americans were at the forefront of change and over the years have elevated golf course development and technology to a precise science.

Construction on the golf course commenced in 1937 and the course was opened in 1939 with 10 playable holes. In 1942 the remaining eight holes were completed. The membership level was set at 350 for gentlemen and 150 for ladies. Fees were set at thirty guineas for gentlemen and twelve guineas for ladies. The annual subscriptions were eight guineas and two and a half guineas respectively. Appropriately, the first chairman of the club was Victor Kent and Felix Oliver was the first captain, the office he held throughout the Second World War years.

The first hole-in-one at the Wanderers Golf Course was achieved by Bill Trollip, a founder member and subsequently captain, chairman and an honorary life member. This took place on 20th March 1940. In those days the achievement of the ultimate perfect fluke was marked by the affixing of a small silver plaque to the wall of the main bar, recording the name of the player, the hole and the date.
