Hyde Park, Sandton

hyde park sandtonHyde Park is one of Sandton’s most sought after addresses. Situated between William Nicol and the Rivonia Road to the North of Bompas, Hyde Park is a suburb of large houses and properties, and is served by the Hyde Park Shopping Centre, a large shopping mall at the junction of William Nicol Drive and Jan Smuts Avenue. The mall houses several well known chain stores, cinemas, banks and a collection of up-market boutiques. Right in the centre of the suburb is Hyde Park High School.

The suburb of Hyde Park is heavily endowed with trees, but nothing on a par with the 4000 that line London’s Hyde Park. There may not be a lake either but what makes Hyde Park so attractive isn’t the undeniable beauty of the suburb; Hyde Park lies right in the midst of the northern suburbs - Sandton, Rosebank, Melrose Arch and of course Hyde Park Shopping Centre are all effortlessly reached from here, and it is this ease of access, and the size of the properties, that make it so sought after.

Despite its centrality, Hyde Park is sedate and tranquil, its winding streets largely devoid of heavy traffic, even if there are a few busy thoroughfares. Hyde Park Shopping Centre is home to some of the most prestigious speciality stores and a bevy of boutiques, whilst Sunday brunch at one of a selection of delis and restaurants is a way of life, not only for those who live in the suburb.

Hyde Park is very well placed for several of Johannesburg's sporting and other venues. Just a few blocks away is the world renowned Wanderers Cricket Ground and the Wanderers Golf Club. It is well placed for the Johannesburg Zoological Gardens and the Melrose Bird Sanctuary. In the northern corner of the suburb is the Tara Rehabillitation Hospital. Hyde Park is seated next door to Sandton CBD, which has grown rapidly in the last few years into the new central business district of Johannesburg.
