Glenadrienne, Sandton

glenadrienne sandtonNestled in amongst the neighbouring suburbs of Hurlingham and Willowild, and bordering the southern tip of the River club, Glenadrienne lies south of Replublic Road as it joins William Nicol Drive in Sandton. This northern, more sought after part of Johannesburg (even fairly mundane homes here fetch over R2 million) is pretty, filled with wide, tree-lined streets and a perfect spot to stay if Sandton and the northern suburbs are your destination.

Certainly if shopping is your thing, you are in good company. Sandton City and the Square (of Nelson Mandela statue fame), in the heart of Sandton, provide hours of shopping and entertainment opportunities. The glintz and glitter, the size of the malls combined, the many pavement restaurants and the presence of a theatre (Theatre on the Square) make it a rather heady mix and very easily two days' worth of fun. Hyde Park Centre too is only down the road.

Not only is Sandton known as 'Africa's richest square mile', it is also the financial and business centre of the city, and the Gautrain now stops here, making trips to and from the OR Tambo International Airport so much easier for the average commuter.

If you know where to go in Sandton then your visit here will be rewarding. Make sure you visit the JSE simply to gawk at the architecture; and the Alice Lane towers, now with Deneys Reitz, the attorneys, in residence for the same reason; Village Walk has a couple of very good restaurants, especially Tivoli; and keep an eye out for a bench on which you will find a couple of art statues - a fine example of public art to beautify public spaces and part of the BenchMark Commission that appoints artists to design public benches.
