Craighall, Sandton

craighall sandtonCraighall is bordered by the suburbs of Hyde Park, Dunkeld and Parkhurst and is one of Johannesburg's oldest suburbs. It is situated between the busy Johannesburg arterial routes of Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nichol. Craighall is one of a string of leafy suburbs that form an affluent stretch on the western side of the city along the southern side of Jan Smuts Avenue, between Parkhurst and the sprawling malls of Sandton.

Craighall origins go back to 1902 when plots were offered for sale in the area. At that time Craighall was rumoured to have been a suburb that charged no service rates and people flocked to buy in the area. Craighall was established after the farm Klipfontein was divided into a residential development as well as a recreational development of lakes and parkland. The owner of the farm, William Rattray, named it Craighall after his birthplace in Blairgowrie, Scotland.

Craighall is well known for the rocky waterfall on the Braamfontein Spruit toward the north-west of the suburb. The waterfall flows year-round but becomes a dramatic spectacle during heavy rain storms. Craighall is a spacious, treed residential suburb with abundant bird-life. The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary which is situated in Delta Park on the Braamfontein Spruit is home to over 200 species of birds. The spruit is also home to several sports clubs and it also has a public footpath which takes you past old mine diggings.

There are many advantages to staying in this part of Johannesburg. Craighall lies between Beyers Naude Drive and Jan Smuts, two of the major arteries of the northern suburbs that easily transfer you to various attractions. Yet despite this, one is little affected by the hurly-burly these roads represent, and the suburb gives itself over entirely to a sense of tranquillity, in no small way attributable to the lush green cover of a myriad trees. Easy access to the M1 is an added bonus.

Craighall is situated just a few blocks away from the Hyde Park Corner shopping mall and the Hyde Square shopping centre.
